Elk Grove, CA

The teeth have many essential responsibilities. Losing even one tooth can significantly impact the functions of your teeth, your smile, and your quality of life. When you lose a tooth, it is important that it be replaced as soon as possible. At Laguna View Family Dental, we can replace a missing tooth with a bridge.

Effects of Tooth Loss

Tooth loss has several significant effects on your life. One of the most obvious effects, depending upon the location of the missing tooth, is the impact it has on your smile. With an empty space in your smile, you may become self-conscious. Tooth loss affects your ability to bite and chew your food. Improperly chewed food is harder for the body to digest. Food particles can also become lodged. Your speech may also suffer. Finally, when you lose a tooth, your jawbone begins to change shape, which can lead to the shifting of your adjacent teeth. With your bite thrown off, you may be faced with such issues as bruxism and TMJ disorder.

What is a Bridge?

A bridge is a restoration that is designed to replace up to three consecutive missing teeth. There are a few different types of bridges, including Maryland or resin-bonded, cantilever, and fixed. Fixed bridges are the most commonly used restorations. This type of bridge consists of the replacement tooth, or pontic tooth, and two dental crowns, one on each side of the tooth. The crowns are used to anchor the bridge in place on your adjacent teeth, referred to as abutment teeth. Typically, bridges are made of porcelain or ceramic. Both of these materials can be made to perfectly match the color of your natural teeth, and they both mimic the light reflection properties of your tooth enamel.

Getting Your Bridge

The process for getting a bridge requires two separate visits. At your first appointment, we prepare your abutment teeth. This involves trimming the enamel or removing some of the enamel to reduce the teeth in size. Trimming the abutment teeth, which is done under a local anesthetic, is necessary for ensuring a proper, natural, comfortable fit. After the teeth have been prepared, we then take an impression of your mouth. The impression is sent to a dental lab, where the bridge is designed using specialized software and created.

It can take up to two weeks for the bridge to be ready. A temporary bridge is placed while you wait to protect the health of the abutment teeth. Once it has been sent back, you return for your second appointment. At this appointment, we check your bridge to ensure that it fits properly and it does not negatively affect your bite. If everything looks good, then the bridge is cemented into place.

Bridges offer several benefits, including:
