What Is Gum Disease?

Gum disease treated by Dr. Leo Townsend in Elk Grove, CAGum disease, or you may have heard it referred to as periodontal disease, is an infection that resides in the tissues around your teeth, whose primary function is to support them. Many patients do not experience any symptoms associated with the periodontal disease until later stages, but some may notice swelling of the gums, red gums, bleeding gums, halitosis, loose teeth, or gums that are painful to the touch. Something as simple as noticing minor bleeding while brushing and flossing can be an indication of something worse. Gum disease is a risk for many people. Smoking, poor oral hygiene, genetics, diabetes, and even pregnancy can all increase your risk of developing periodontal disease. Discuss these with us at your appointment, should any of them apply to you.

Can Gum Disease Be Reversed?

Gum disease can be treated if caught early enough. Early stage periodontal disease is called gingivitis and can be treated if caught in time. This is why it is extremely important to come in and see us regularly and to practice good oral hygiene. Periodontitis is the name given to more advanced stages of the disease. It affects almost half of adults over 30 in the U.S. This can cause shifting or loose teeth (or for teeth to fall out), or can lead to bone loss in the jaw or mouth. It is essential that gum disease is caught sooner rather than later for any treatment to take place.

How Do I know if I have Gum Disease?

So long as you come in regularly, or at least every six months, it is likely that we will indeed find periodontal disease in its earliest stages. Every examination appointment involves an in-depth screening to make sure that your gums are healthy and strong. With so many different potentials for problems and possible risk factors, it is easy to contract. If you think you may have gum disease, express these concerns to us before your check-up, or come in anytime to let, our professional staff take a look at your mouth.
