Early Orthodontics
Elk Grove, CA

Braces for children by Dr. Leo Townsend in Elk Grove, CAWhen most people think about orthodontics, they tend to think about young teens wearing braces. While common, braces are only one part of what orthodontics can do for a wide array of patients. Did you know that many orthodontic issues can be detected, and even treated, at an early age? In fact, many issues are easier to treat earlier. It is recommended that children have an early orthodontic evaluation by the age of 7, around the time that the adult teeth begin to erupt. At Laguna View Family Dental we can provide the early orthodontic treatment children need to develop a beautiful healthy smile.

What Issues Can Be Addressed with Early Orthodontics?

An early orthodontic evaluation is essential for detecting or predicting the presence of a wide array of different orthodontic issues that can affect your child. In detecting potential issues, we can provide your child with the treatment they need to prevent more serious orthodontic issues from developing later in life. Issues that can be treated with orthodontic issues include
•  An open bite. This is when the top and bottom front teeth do not come together, leaving an open space.
•  A crossbite. This type of bite is when one or more of your upper teeth fall inside of the lower teeth on one side of your jaw.
•  Overcrowding.
•  Issues with spacing.
•  The loss of baby teeth too early.
•  Teeth that have stopped erupting, which can otherwise lead to later tooth displacement.
•  Teeth that are erupting out of sequence.

The 3 Stages of Orthodontic Treatment

There are 3 stages of orthodontic treatment.
•  The earliest stage of orthodontic treatment generally occurs between the ages of 2 and 6. During this stage, the focus of treatment is ensuring that your child has enough space in their mouth for all of their teeth to erupt. We may provide a space maintainer for a child who has lost a tooth too early or a special device to help the jaw develop properly. We can also provide tips on how to help your child break habits like thumb sucking or pacifier use.
•  The second stage of orthodontic treatment occurs between the ages of 6 and 12. During this stage, we focus on ensuring the proper alignment of the jaws as well as the proper alignment of the adult teeth as they erupt.
•  The third stage of orthodontic treatment is the most familiar stage and occurs from around the age of 13 and older. The goal of this stage is to align the teeth, either with braces or aligners, to ensure a healthy, beautiful smile.

Benefits of Early Orthodontics

There are several benefits of early orthodontic treatment, including
•  Helping your child to break habits that could otherwise contribute to alignment issues.
•  Predicting how the adult teeth will develop.
•  Preventing issues with the development of proper speech.
•  Guiding the jaws into proper alignment.
•  Reducing the risk of your child developing cavities and gum disease.
•  Reducing, or even eliminating the need for later orthodontic treatment later in life.
•  Helping your child to develop a healthy, beautiful, confident smile.

With early orthodontics, we can help to detect the presence of orthodontic issues in young children, helping them to develop a beautiful healthy smile as they grow. For more information, and to schedule an appointment for your child, call Laguna View Family Dental at (916) 683-1335 today.
