Your Child’s First Dental Visit

Child's first visit at Dr. Leo Townsend in Elk Grove, CAA child’s first dental visit can make a significant impression, so at Laguna View Family Dental, we work hard to make it a good one! We strive for all of our patients to feel comfortable and informed, including our youngest of patients. Your child's first dental visit will be mostly information gathering, along with a simple examination. We will ask some questions, let your child see or even touch some tools and show them how cool it is to wear sunglasses. Additionally, we will discuss the appropriate dental hygiene steps based on your child’s age and possibly demonstrate positive cleaning tips.

Your Child's First Dental Exam

Your child’s first dental exam will vary depending on their age and level of comfort. We will begin by asking questions such as their physical and dental health, what hygiene steps they currently take, and what questions you or the child may have. If the child is willing, we will perform a dental cleaning, provide a re-mineralization treatment with fluoride, and take x-rays. Following a cleaning, Dr. Leo Townsend will review your child’s oral health with you and the child, if decay has been spotted we will discuss treatment options.

How can I help make my child’s dentist visit positive?

We love having so many supportive parents who want the best for their child’s health. Parents can support us by taking steps to help make their child’s first dental visit positive and enjoyable. This can begin with conversations at home. Parents can inform the child of where they are going and what we are going to do. Using positive descriptive words including that we want to check their smile, look for sugar bugs, and count their teeth, Avoid languages that can be scary, such as shots, needles, or drills. Avoid any stories from your own childhood experience that can cause distress. How your child feels about the dentist can affect their viewpoint for life.

We encourage parents and guardians to stay with their child during the initial examination, once they are comfortable, and depending on their age, you can let your child join us on their own.

At what age does dental care begin?

Starting dental care for your child does not have a specific age or number, it should be always and continuously with varying steps based on their age. This may surprise you, but your child’s dental health begins in the womb, they begin growing their teeth before they are even born. The foods and vitamins pregnant women have, or lack can impact the health of the developing fetus’ teeth. Once a child is born, even though you can not see their teeth, what you do can still matter.

We recommend parents develop an oral health habit with their babies right from the start. You can do this by:

•  Daily wiping their gums with a clean damp cloth. This quick step helps your baby grow used to you cleaning their mouth and helps you gain a habit of cleaning their mouth.
•  Avoid putting your baby to bed with a bottle. Babies who are put to bed with a bottle are at higher risk of tooth decay, even if their teeth have not come up yet!
•  Avoid giving babies juice. They do not need it, and juice is high in sugar.
